THE subculture of the 'Ballers' The subculture originated in the late 70's/early 80's in urban communities in basketball cities such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. They are predominately African American youth that have engaged themselves in both cultures of hip-hop and basketball. The baller subculture originates from the relationship between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the music genre Hip-Hop. Ballers are players that could have potentially made it in leagues such as the NBA, but have chosen not to or have entirely not taken that path. Ballers enjoy the free going, anybody-plays games that becomes a lifestyle for them, often stating 'Ball is Life'. Street-ball is a variation of basketball featuring a less formal structure and enforcement of the game's rules. The game showcase skilled dribble moves that centre attention around the individual and less of a team. The different variations of streetball-ball games that are commonly played are 'pickup games', 21 and 'Boston'. Streetballers are known for embarrassing their defenders with relentless dribble moves and finishing with spectacular dunks
